Walter Rauschenbusch

Walter Rauschenbusch (1861-1918) was an American theologian and writer who played an important role in the social gospel movement. He was born in Rochester, New York and grew up in a German immigrant household. After studying theology at Rochester Theological Seminary and the University of Rochester, Rauschenbusch became a Baptist minister. His revolutionary book, “Christianity and the Social Crisis”, published in 1907, called on Christians to fight against social injustices, particularly those related to poverty and class disparities. Rauschenbusch firmly believed in the role of the Church in advocating for social reform and was a supporter of Christian socialism. Through his writings, speeches, and influence, he shaped the social gospel movement in the United States and inspired generations of progressive Christians to engage in social and political activism.
