Marjane Satrapi

Marjane Satrapi is an Iranian artist, graphic novelist and filmmaker born on November 22, 1969 in Rasht, Iran. Raised in Tehran, she witnessed the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and the Iran-Iraq war that followed, experiences that greatly influenced her work. Satrapi left Iran at the age of 24 to study visual communication in Vienna. She gained international acclaim with the publication of her graphic memoir, “Persepolis,” which tells the story of her childhood and adolescence in Iran during a tumultuous political period. Satrapi’s distinctive visual style and poignant storytelling have earned her numerous awards and critical acclaim. Later, she adapted “Persepolis” into an animated film, further solidifying her reputation as a talented filmmaker. Throughout her career, Satrapi has continued to create thought-provoking works that explore themes of identity, politics, and the human experience within the context of her Iranian heritage.
