Jane Rule

Jane Rule (1931-2007) was a Canadian author best known for her contributions to lesbian literature. Born on March 28, 1931, in Plainfield, New Jersey, Rule moved to Canada in 1956 and became a Canadian citizen in 1967. She earned a master’s degree in English literature from the University of British Columbia and taught English and creative writing at various universities. Rule’s novels, including “Desert of the Heart” and “The Young in Each Other’s Arms,” explored themes of same-sex relationships and contested societal norms. She was an important figure in the development of queer literature and a staunch advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. Jane Rule passed away on November 27, 2007, on Galiano Island, British Columbia, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the field of lesbian literature.
