Alan Hovhaness

Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000) was an American composer of Armenian and Scottish descent. Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, he showed an early aptitude for music, learning to play the piano at the age of four. Hovhaness’s compositions were greatly influenced by his Armenian heritage and spirituality, incorporating elements of Eastern music and culture. He composed over 500 works, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and choral pieces. His use of modal scales, polyphony, and lush harmonies characterized his distinctive style. Hovhaness’s music often evokes a sense of contemplation, spirituality, and the grandeur of nature. He received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to American music, and his works continue to be performed worldwide.
